Spiritual Atheist: Divine Digital

In the Beginning was the Word, says the Bible. And the Word was with God. In the Yoga Sutras, the letters A, U and M stand for the ultimate symbol (Vachaka) of Brahman, also called Pranava. Both interpretations of reality aren’t far from what some 21st-century physicists are proposing — that information, not matter and energy, may be the most basic unit of existence!

The Serbian-born Oxford physicist Vlatko Vedral, for instance, regards the Universe itself and its working to be the ebb and flow of information. We are all transient patterns of information, Vedral writes in Decoding Reality: The Universe as Quantum Information, created just so as to pass on the recipe of our basic forms and patterns to the future generations with the help of a four-letter digital code called DNA.Image

In such a scheme, uncertainty or probability is the Mother of Information, whether it manifests itself in the quantum chaos at the heart of an exploding star or as discrete arrays of DNA’s loops and ladders; in economics or social networking!

The Tantric tradition also slots information as the ultimate ingredient of reality. At the root of reality is an Ocean of Knowledge called Bodha Samudra or Akula, says philosopher-savant Gopinath Kaviraj.

This is responsible for the illusory division of the world into outer and inner realms. It disappears upon enlightenment, which is supposed to be a paradoxical experience beyond words and thoughts.

“I am my own eye/ and I am in the emptiness blue too,” sings the mystic master Jnandeva even as he gazes at Nirvana or Non-Return of Nature.
